Kimber Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1922.  During 1930s he stays with his grandparents in Slingerlands, N.Y.   1938-1942 Kimber Smith works as errand boy in a printery in New York. In the evening he attends a painting class at the “Work Progression Administration” (WPA).  After the end of the war in 1945 , Kimber Smith returns to New York and continues his studies at the Art Academy. During the day, he works as typographer. In 1950 he finishes his art studies. Marriage to Gabrielle Staub in 1953, in New York.

In 1954 Kimber Smith and his wife Gabrielle moving  to Paris, where she was working as the correspondent for "Life" magazine, and he established his art studio and began exhibiting his works with a group of American artists in Paris - Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Shirley Jaffe, Ellsworth Kelly, Helen Frankenthaler, Al Held, Jean Riopelle and others.  His both sons were born in Paris, Duncan in 1956 and Miles in 1958. In beginning of 1960s he moves back to US and from1964 to 1968 works as art teacher at the Dayton Art Institute, Ohio. 1968-75 Lives in New York and East Hampton, N.Y.  1973-75 Medical treatment in Paris. 1975-81 Kimber Smith is living and working in East Hampton, where he dies in 1981 as a result of his illness.

His works are in many public and private collections in Europe and USA.
